Legacy Sertoma supports the following programs by volunteering time and raising funds. These programs support the national Sertoma mission as well as beneficial local programs that have been selected by the club members and their leadership.
Sertoma Annual Fund
Sertoma raises funds annually to support scholarships and grants. Two scholarship programs, the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and the Communicative Disorders, award 45, $1,000 scholarships annually. In addition, Sertoma awards approximately $100,000 in grants to their National Affiliates that belong to the Adopt-an-Agency program. Other programs supported by the Annual Fund include SAFEEars!, A Sound Investment, the creation and production of new hearing health efforts, Serteens, Collegiate and National Heritage programs. www.sertoma.org/Giving
HEARS (Hearing Education & Assistance by Rocky Mountain Sertomans)
The HEARS program was established in 1998 by local Sertoma clubs. Since then over 2,000 financially challenged individuals have been fitted with hearing aids at little or no cost to them. In the 2010 -2011 fiscal year, fifty-four people received high quality digital hearing aids -- a gift to the community valued at over $151,000 and a small miracle for each recipient. http://hearscosp.org
International Hearing Dog, Inc. (IHDI)
Sertoma's Adopt-an-Agency program is a network of non-profit, hearing health organizations that share the same mission and goals; helping expand awareness and impacting individuals with communicative disorders. Affiliates must be tax exempt charitable organizations and be sponsored by an active Sertoma Club. Legacy Sertoma is proud to sponsor International Hearing Dog, Inc., a Henderson, Colorado organization which trains service dogs to assist hearing impaired citizens cope with the challenges of every day life, then places the dogs with worthy recipients at no charge. As an affiliate, IHDI is now eligible to avail itself of Sertoma's many resources such as specialized training, special grants, and others which will further their mission. http://www.ihdi.org/
College Scholarships for School District 38 Graduates
Legacy Sertoma offers a one-year college scholarship to one deserving graduating student of each of School District 38 High School annually. The program is designed so that when evaluating applications, special consideration is given to applicants who are affected with hearing disabilities or who are entering hearing related professions. In the event that no applications are received from one school, both scholarships may be awarded to students of the other.
Tri-Lakes Cares is a community based, volunteer supported, resource center whose purpose is to improve people's lives through emergency assistance, self-sufficency and relief programs, education and other social services. Programs and services include assistance in the areas of medical, food, clothing, financial, and seasonal. Legacy Sertoma provides financial assistance to Tri-Lakes Cares, primarily during the year end holiday seasons. tri-lakescares.org/
Homes for our Troops (HFOT)
Homes for our Troops is a top rated national non-profit 501(c)(3) organization based in Taunton, Mass. founded in 2004. Homes for our Troops' mission is to build specially adapted homes for service members who have been severely injured in combat operations since September 11, 2001. All homes are built at no cost to the veteran through the generous support of individuals, foundations, and corporate contributors. Five homes have been built for severely disabled veterans in the Parker, Elizabeth, Black Forrest, CO area with more in the planning stage. All proceeds from Legacy Sertoma's annual Golf Classic, held at the Woodmoor Country Club in Monument, go to support this most worthy charity. www.homesforourtroops.org
Rocky Mountain Youth Leadership Foundation (RMYLF)
The RMYLF holds an annual summer conference which provides top high school students, primarily 11th graders, opportunities to build their leadership and teambuilding skills. Patriotism, an awareness of sacrifices made by others to preserve our freedoms, a better understanding of our free enterprise system, improved cognitive thinking and communication skills are all areas stressed which strive to make each student a better leader. Legacy Sertoma is proud to sponsor students to this great citizenship and leadership building endeavor.
Girls State and Boys State
Girls State and Boys State are among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for 3rd year high school students in the nation. They are participatory programs wherein each student becomes a part of the establishment and operation of their local, county and state government. Each participant can receive up to four (4) college credits with completion of her/his respective program. We, as today's leaders have a duty to teach and guide the young men and women that will be the leaders of tomorrow.
Started in 1923, Christmas Unlimited is one of the regions oldest charities. Although 12,000 children each received $35 - $40 worth of gifts this past holiday season, Christmas Unlimited is a full-time, year-round provider of services. It's Operation Back To School program provided 4,300 at-risk youth sets of basic school supplies. The organization works with the District Attorney's Youth Services Program and Teen Court to provide volunteer opportunities for pre-teens, and with 42 human services agencies and schools to identify and connect with families needing help. http://www.christmasunlimited.org/
